February is the month of "Weather Windows."

CAPT. Scott’s Fishing Corner

Captain Scott is a veteran to the Northeast Florida fishing scene. As an outdoorsman and avid fisherman his whole life, Scott has gained years of mental tools and learned the strategies and tricks needed to be successful fishing guide and boat captain. He runs locally out of Saint Augustine, Florida on his 24 Sea Fox Bay Boat. Waylen Bay Marine is a proud sponsor of Capt. Scott and Full House Fishing Charters. You can catch up on all the latest news for Capt. Scott on his Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/fullhousefishingcharters/

You may have heard captains talk about weather windows before. What they are referring to is the couple days after a weather front when the wind changes direction and blows to the west or southwest. The seas will calm and this is the perfect time to use that sick day or maybe if you lucky enough to have a great boss, just talk him or her into taking off work to go fishing!

INSHORE

The inshore fishing can be great this month with crystal clear water helping all of you chasing Redfish in the flats. These fish are easily caught on both artificial and live bait. Sight-fishing is pretty much the norm as the water is cold and the fish aren't moving fast. You will also see Black Drum and Sheepshead head mixed in. The same goes for the main creeks, with the water being cold you must slow down your presentation and retrieve down. These fish are not going to chase a bait. Jig heads with live Shrimp or Fiddler Crabs is my personal choice this time of year.

OFFSHORE

The offshore fishing can be incredible this month. For the big game fisherman, the Wahoo bite from 150' to the ledge can be awesome right now, (See the 2 Wahoo Ryan and Nikki are holding below, caught January 31st on the 30 ST Contender Demo boat FOR SALE*). I have already seen a few fish over 100LBs! Keep a look out for Black Fin Tuna as well. Most of the Wahoo guys are high speed trolling but you could also pull Ballyhoo, save on the fuel bill, and still catch quality fish. The bottom fishing has been great from 70' all the way out to the ledge. I have been having better days on big Sea Bass, Vermillion Snapper, Porgies, and Trigger Fish from 70'-100' in my 24' Sea Fox Viper Bay Boat.

We have already had some interest on the FREE fishing classes and will try to put one together soon. Please send the folks at Waylen Bay a Facebook message, or send an e-mail to dylan@waylenbaymarine.com , and let them know what you are most interested in.

Watch out for those "Weather Windows" and go bend a rod! Stay safe and see you next month!!

See-yah out on the water!
