March Madness Isn't Just About Basketball

Here we are in March, Spring is right around the corner, water temperatures are beginning to rise, and fishing is heating up!

INSHORE

The recent full moon just passed is usually the beginning of the Sheepshead spawn. Really big fish can be caught using Fiddler crabs and live shrimp. Pilings, jetties and oyster bars are a good place to start. For the next month the big Black Drum are moving around in the inlet and deep holes up in the North River. Live Blue Crabs with enough weight to hold botom, 50lb test two feet of leader, and 7/0 hook is all you need. Have fun catching them but please release them as they are our breeding stock and food value is not all that great. There size, 35-70 pounds is quite common. While you are fishing for these Black Drum, have a couple of rods rigged for Whiting. What they lack in size is made up for on the dinner table. The Redfish bite is only getting better. 1/4 oz jig heads with shrimp or mud minnows will do the trick.

OFFSHORE

The offshore madness is all about the Wahoo right now. It has been an incredible bite of fish and will continue for at least the next month. These fish have been in 130'-170' of water. High speed trolling will work. The whole idea is to cover ground but once you catch a fish, stay there and work it good before moving on. Wahoo are a somewhat schooling fish this time of year so multiple hookups are always possible. These Wahoo are averaging 30-70lbs with quite a few over 90lbs having been caught already. We have what I think is a world class Wahoo fishery here, there are not too many places you could catch 6 or more in a day. Mix in a few Black Fin Tuna and some Mahi for a great day out fishing!

Bottom Fishing is also still really good right now. I have been out a few times recently weather permitting and have done really well on Vermillion Snapper, Black Sea Bass and Trigger Fish. Using double rigs can get you a nice mess of fish for the dinner table.
Red Snapper and Grouper are still closed!

Come see us at the Conch House Marina in the Wahoo Challenge March 17th-19th! We will be fishing our 30' Contender team Waylen Bay boat. Stop in to see the big catch and to check out our full contender line-up at the docks.

We are still looking for more feedback on the FREE fishing classes and are working towards putting it together. Please send the folks at Waylen Bay a Facebook message, or send an e-mail to dylan@waylenbaymarine.com , and let them know what you are most interested in.

See-yah out on the water!
